On first impression, North Uist looked to be mostly water – the island is a mass of lochs and lovely they looked too.

In fact, the guidebooks say it is only about 10% water.

North Uist has very few mountains.

Peat is a major fuel on North Uist. Here was a recently dug peat face. Apparently it takes ten days to dig a year’s supply of peat.

Across the bog cotton field, plastic sacks of peat have been filled, ready for carting away.

A couple of walkers climb a wooded hill in North Uist.

And that, perhaps, sums up North Uist scenery – except that woods were not common.

Now there’s a kissing gate and a half. Presumably it is deer proof.
