Glen Valtos to Great Bernera

The road to Uig went through a gorge called Glen Valtos.

It was quite impressive.

It was all in a day’s life for the sheep.

Earshader

Well, what a lovely name.

And for telephone kiosk aficionados a real rarity. A standard box with two half doors. Perhaps they are easier to manage in a howling gale.

The Bernera Bridge

We were now heading towards another island – Great Bernera. This is but a short hop from Lewis and a bridge joins the two islands. This is not just any bridge. It was the first pre stressed concrete bridge in Europe and dates from 1953. It seems the locals on Bernera had a real campaign to get a bridge, threatening to blast away the land to form a causeway if it was not forthcoming.

It is generally considered that the island would be depopulated now had it not been for the bridge.

Another lovely name – Barraglom, which sounds, like a Narnian character.

And there is the bridge. Despite it’s more than 50 years age, the remains of slipways can still be seen.

And below is the information.

There were standing stones by the bridge and a good viewpoint for the bridge.
