Carloway

Just north of Callanish there’s another top archaeological site – the broch at Carloway.

This is an ancient fortified building – or at least the remains of it.

Let’s look at the signage and then the broch and its surroundings.

The broch was a bell shaped building with double walls which were, in effect, secret passageways.

From the broch we could look down on the remains of one of the old black houses.

You can get an idea of the thickness of the wall with a sheep sitting on top.

Old ruins and new buildings in a view from the broch

A notice you wouldn’t see in the south of England.

Back to the broch with its double walls.

It’s a substantial structure.

Some more views from the broch.

That’s not too ancient a tractor down there.

And that’s the present Carloway village
