9th August – Heading North

We breakfasted and decided on this day to head up to the most northerly point on Lewis.

Our old map actually showed a disused  mineral railway – maybe one of Lord Leverhulme’s ventures. These days it is just a track heading off to a lake, which was once a quarry.

So here, on the very edge of Stornoway, we have the road north on the right and the former mineral railway on the left. We, in a car, took the road over Glen Mor Barvas – a wild and desolate area where digging peat was the main activity.

But there were a few buildings.

A hazy view over Loch Mor Barvas – is that a fisherman in the water?

It certainly is.

Nearby was a blackhouse – not in bad order.

And once again, the modern house.

We stopped to look at the Truiseil Stone. It was something of a whopper.

I loved the lichen.

A passing person does give an idea of the scale of this standing stone.

By now we had crossed the island and were on the west coast – still heading north.
