East of Stornoway

After a bit of relaxation at the tent we headed east out onto the Eye Peninsula

Here, we were on the Eye Causeway.

A look back towards Stornoway.

We visited St Columba’s Church – or what was left of it.

Nearby there was a modern ‘cairn’ to the farm raiders of 1838.

After the information, the cairn itself.

And now the church – St Columba’s Church.

You can see the cairn in the background.

We headed further on to this headland, which must once have been a separate island.

This was the very end at Tiumpan with a rather sweet little lighthouse. Once upon a time, lighthouses needed teams of workers to keep them going. These days they are automatic and the old living accommodation can be put to other uses. In this case, the lighthouse buildings had become a kennels and cattery.

There were good views by sea…

…and by land.

Once again, we can see quite a high density of housing.

A final port of call was at little Portnaguran.

We settled down for a last night in the islands. By bedtime the next day we were due quite near Inverness.
