Cullipool (2)

Let’s start with a small map of Luing to get our bearings.

The grid size is 10 kilometres.

We were at Cullipool which is on the west coast. Balvicar is on the neighbouring island of Seil. These islands are known as ‘The Slate Islands’. Arduane is on mainland Scotland. So is Degnish.

We had wandered up to the north quarry at Cullipool – another lake now. The church can be seen, set up on the hill. The quarry was very much a slate wasteland.

What a variety of rock colours, even in our present rather flat light.

A huge boulder has been placed on the track into the quarry. More montbretia and ragwort grew at the edge of the quarry area.

A slug enjoyed the damp conditions under bladderwort?

More rocks and islets out to sea. It could be that the distant island getting lost in the mist is Jura.

Pleasure boats were beginning to appear. The village you see is Ellenabeich on Seil.

A walker makes her way into the quarry where there are impressive angled strata.

A little yacht passed by the lighthouse on the rock.

We returned to the village with its rows of whitewashed cottages.

There we have Cullipool slate on a Cullipool roof

Cullipool has a very miniature garden railway enthusiast. The station lamps have suffered a bit.

There is a notice suggesting holiday makers might like to build sculptures with the slate on a beach. There is no sand for children to play in so what a good idea. Above is a stone circle. Below it’s a more tower like structure

Let’s end with that wonderful Cullipool flora.
