On the Isle of Eriskay

Eriskay was an island to fall in love with. It was small and beautiful and full of interest. It ran to a very good community shop which no doubt saved the locals the journey to Daliburgh. We went to see the sea loch, which almost cuts the island into two.

Junk lay around the place. Marine junk is very common. I suspect people who work with and on the sea have great faith in nature’s ability to clear up. For me it is just interesting.

The loch was much as you might expect. The calm waters of this natural sea inlet were surrounded by rocky hills with a strip of pretty seaweed separating these two elements.

But there was a jetty with a small fishing fleet. The orange suited chap was painting.

The SY registration of the boats must be Stornoway, the ‘capital’ of the Outer Hebrides but some 86 miles away as the hooded crow flies.

I haven’t worked out what CY stands for, but she’s the Crystal Sea and based on South Uist. CY807 is based at Mallaig on the mainland.

On the jetty – nets, ropes, and containers.

A collection of boats at the jetty – and across the loch were some Eriskay houses.

Away in the distance – slightly blurred through binoculars, some more marine ware was laid up. We decided to get a closer view.
